I posted these a long time ago, but I just added size comparisons to them, so I figured I’d upload them again.
In True History Part 1 (2nd century AD) by Lucian of Samosata, Lucian and his comrades get swallowed by a whale soon after returning to Earth. Inside the whale, they have to fight six different races of hostile creatures. In order, they are:
"towards the tail, on the western parts of the wood, live the Tarichanes (Salt-fish-men), a people with eel’s eyes, and faces like crabs, bold, warlike, and that live upon raw flesh."
Pelamus is their commander.
"On the other side, at the right hand wall, are the Tritonomendetes (Triton-weasels), in their upper parts men, and in the lower resembling weasels."
"On the left are the Carcinochires (crab’s hands) and the Thynnocephali (tunny-heads, i.e., men with heads like those of the tunny-fish), who have entered into a league offensive and defensive with each other."
"The middle part is occupied by the Paguradæ (crab-men) and the Psittopodes (sparrow-footed), a warlike nation, and remarkably swift-footed." Scintharus was given regions near the whale’s mouth "on condition of paying an annual tribute to the Psittopodes of five hundred oysters".
There were more than a thousand, but they were armed with nothing but fish-bones.
